General information
The Crisis Center of West Texas provides services to the following nine counties in the Permian Basin area: Andrews, Crane, Ector, Gaines, Loving, Pecos, Reeves, Ward, and Winkler. Our small staff spearheads the operation to provide crisis assistance to the citizens of a 9,682-square mile section of rural West Texas with a population of over 200,000.
Angel House: The Family Violence Shelter in Odessa: Many women and their children are forced to leave their homes due to a violent situation. The Crisis Center provides shelter, clothes, food, necessities, job training and school assistance for those women and children who need a safe, secret place to stay at no cost.
Education and Community Awareness Program: The Crisis Center of West Texas provides prevention and informational education to the community at no cost. The W.H.O. (We Help Ourselves) program is an anti-victimization program for children ages 4-18. Usually presented in school classrooms, the program is designed to encourage children to “help themselves” by teaching them ways to recognize potentially dangerous situations. It also teaches children to report abuse if it does occur. Dating violence is another well-received program; as are programs dealing with bullying and cyber sexting.
Prevention Initiatives: For the past few decades The Crisis Center of West Texas has been standing on the bank of the river rescuing victim-survivors that have fallen in. Now as we enter a new decade of service we are taking a new approach, we are going to the head of the river to help prevent people from failing into the river. This initiative is deigned to alter cultural and social norms among our youth. Abuse is not love. Love should not hurt.
24-Hour Crisis Hotline: Trained crisis response personnel answer our crisis hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can provide community resources and emotional support for anyone who might need help.
Crisis Response and Intervention: Law enforcement officers or medical personnel my activate our crisis intervention teams 24 hours a day, seven days a week to any crisis where a victim might need our services. We also provide initial crisis counseling for the victim-survivor at the scene and advocate for his/her needs throughout any legal or medical processes that may follow the incident.
Counseling Services: The Crisis Center provides initial crisis counseling through our victim advocates who talks with the victim-survivor and helps them work through the initial emotional response to their trauma. The victim advocate meets with a victim-survivor client once a week for up to four weeks, at which time they are referred to a licensed professional counselor who continues to provide additional help, if needed.
