The Leavenworth Times is a daily community newspaper in Leavenworth, Kansas and is the oldest daily newspaper in Kansas. The newspaper was founded in 1856 by Robert Crozier, who would become a U.S. Senator. In 1871 Daniel R. Anthony (brother of Susan B. Anthony) bought the newspaper. In that year Anthony shot and killed a rival publisher R.C. Satterlee of the Kansas Herald. A jury absolved him. In 1875, Anthony was shot at the Leavenworth Opera House by rival editor William Embry, editor of the Daily Appeal. He survived and the Anthony family continued to publish the newspaper until the 1960s. Since 1999, the Leavenworth Times has been owned by GateHouse Media. Besides the Leavenworth Times, the company also publishes the weekly Lansing Times and Chronicle Shopper, and helps produce the Fort Leavenworth Lamp in association with the public affairs office at Fort Leavenworth.
